This comprehensive course is designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of dentists, dental hygienists, and dental assistants in the principles and applications of digital technologies within modern dental practice. Participants will explore the use of CAD/CAM systems and intraoral scanning to design and fabricate dental restorations with greater efficiency and precision. Special emphasis will be placed on integrating digital workflows to improve clinical outcomes and elevate the patient experience.

The program combines engaging lectures, case-based discussions, and a rich hands-on component. Participants will have the opportunity to gain practical experience using state-of-the-art TRIOS intraoral scanners to capture digital impressions, as well as complete a guided laboratory session where the participants will be able to learn how to do digital wax-ups with Blue Sky Bio, a free, user-friendly CAD software. By the conclusion of the course, attendees will be equipped to confidently utilize digital tools to deliver innovative, high-quality dental care.

Dr. Micah C. Wright is an Assistant Professor of Research and scholar with expertise in building higher education support programs for student veterans. With a PhD from the University of Texas at San Antonio, Dr. Wright has dedicated over ten years to advancing knowledge and fostering innovation in military and veterans studies.

Known for his work with student veterans at UTSA and Texas State University and his experience working with the Military Health Institute, Dr. Wright has published scholarship in journals like Duke University’s Pedagogy, the Online Learning Journal, and Southwest American Literature, and presented findings at national and international conferences. His research focuses on advancing the health and wellbeing of the military affiliated community, to include service members, veterans, and their families.

In addition to academic accomplishments, Dr. Wright is a Marine Corps Veteran, Purple Heart Recipient, and community advocate for those who serve our country. He has served on the Military Advisory Council with the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, sits on the board of the 3rd Battalion 1st Marines Association, and was recently elected to the Executive Board of the Veterans Studies Association.

About Jeslina Raj, PsyD
Jeslina Raj, PsyD, is an associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry at The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio. Raj is a licensed psychologist providing comprehensive therapy, patient readiness for surgery evaluations, and consultations with oncologists and surgeons at the Mays Cancer Center, home to UT Health San Antonio MD Anderson Cancer Center. She provides cognitive behavior therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction therapy to patients diagnosed with cancer.

Raj has established behavioral health clinics at UT Health Physicians Medical Drive and Westover Hills primary care locations. In these primary care clinics, she provides solution-focused, evidence-based care while consulting with primary care providers. She is the first psychologist to be fully embedded within the University Health Transplant Center, providing extensive clinical services and evaluations for patients in the hospital and in the outpatient setting. She is the director of psychological services at the transplant center, acting as a liaison between the Department of Psychiatry and the center.

She received her doctorate in clinical psychology from Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky and completed her clinical psychology residency at The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio. Raj completed her post-doctoral fellowship at Texas A&M University School of Medicine.

He received his Ph.D. in Quantitative Chemistry (Chemometrics) from the University of New South Wales and previously served as an NHMRC Research Fellow in Australia and as research assistant professor at the University of Minnesota.

Over the course of his career, he has trained scientists from widely varying backgrounds, including chemistry, virology, and bioinformatics. His current laboratory continues this interdisciplinary tradition, bringing together expertise in genetics, virology, cancer biology, bioinformatics, mathematics, and artificial intelligence. Dr. Ebrahimi is principal investigator on multiple awards, including an R01 on donor-specific antiviral immunity mediated by APOBEC3 enzymes.

He has published 49 papers in journals such as Nature Microbiology, Nature Communications, PLoS Biology, Molecular Biology and Evolution, and Science Advances, and has developed several open-access bioinformatic tools for the analysis of complex viral and cancer datasets.

For the baby, serious consequences include loss of weight and the label of “failure to thrive”. For the mother, this results in sore and cracked nipples, mastitis, painful engorgement and post-partum depression due to an inability to nurse her baby. This has classically been treated by a physician taking a scalpel or a pair of scissors to the newborn’s mouth and cutting the attachment. The treatment of choice, however, is for a dentist to use laser technology to painlessly, bloodlessly remove the attachment, allowing the infant to immediately nurse. Though many practitioners perform tongue-tie release, few are trained in the PEEL Technique ®.

This program will provide a total of 8 hours of instruction and application of coronal polishing.

The lecture will be provided in:

(TWO) 2 1/2 hours of Interactive webinars, plus....3 hours of hands-on or clinical information will be provided in our clinic on patient simulators (dental mannequins).(This is intended to provide this educational program in a safe environment without patient participation.)

“Coronal polishing” pertains to the removal of plaque and extrinsic stain from exposed natural and restored tooth surfaces using an appropriate rotary instrument with rubber cup or brush and polishing agent.

With this course you will have two required webinars full of the most up-to-date information regarding coronal polishing, and how to improve your contribution to your dental practice. After the completion of both webinars, you will have a live, hands-on opportunity to apply your skills and master appropriate techniques prior to returning to your practice with your new certification.

Participants DO NOT need to provide a patient for this course. Clinical applications will be made on simulated patients (dental mannequins) in a clinical setting.

About Jennifer Fisher, DNP, MSN-ED, RN, MHA, CCM
Dr. Fisher is an accomplished nurse with over 28 years of experience at the bedside and in the community. Working in areas such as adult surgical, pediatric hematology/oncology, pediatric intermediate care, pediatric intensive care, pediatric home health, pediatric private duty nursing, telephonic case management, and within the community respite setting has allowed her to develop extensive skills and knowledge in both adult and pediatric populations. Dr. Fisher has a special interest in working with & advocating for individuals with special needs and their caregivers through Children’s Association for Maximum Potential (CAMP). As a result of her time with CAMP, she realized her passion for teaching and helping every person achieve their maximum potential. Educationally prepared with an MS in nursing education (2021) and a DNP in leadership (2023), Dr. Fisher believes that every learner can be successful with the right support.

Course Overview

This course is designed to satisfy the Texas Dental Board requirement for continuing education in minimal enteral sedation (required every 2 years for level 1 minimal sedation permit holders). This course does not qualify a dentist to apply for a new minimal sedation permit. Individuals who complete the course will receive a certificate, which can be submitted to the TSBDE as documentation of continuing education in minimal sedation.

Objectives

At the end of this course, the participant will have a renewed understanding of the many elements of the safe administration of enteral conscious sedation including:

The day before its San Antonio Combat PTSD Conference, STRONG STAR at UT Health San Antonio is presenting a continuing education workshop, “Accelerating Recovery: Essential Socratic Questioning for PTSD.”

The workshop will focus on one of the most powerful tools for promoting recovery from post-traumatic stress disorder: effective trauma-focused Socratic questioning. With a systematic, step-by-step approach, participants will learn to identify, prioritize, and skillfully evaluate the key beliefs that keep patients stuck, allowing for meaning and lasting recovery. The workshop is designed for clinicians across experience levels and will include case examples, live demonstrations, and experiential exercise.

Recent guidance published jointly by the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons pertaining to the prevention of prosthetic joint infection in the dental setting has been recently introduced. In addition new recommendations from the United States Preventive Services Task Force addressing screening for oral cancer have also been introduced. Both of these new sets of guidelines have generated much debate and consternation in the dental profession. The purpose of this course is to update the practitioner on the pros and cons of both recommendations and offer a perspective on how best to interpret and implement.

Scientific Translation and Community Engagement

Scientific translation is the process of moving knowledge and discoveries across basic science, clinical practice, and community settings to improve health and well-being. Community engagement strengthens this process by bringing community knowledge, priorities, and lived experience into research and helping ensure that research is relevant, practical, and responsive to community needs.

Goal

Our goal is to bring together community members, faculty, students, and other partners to learn from community–academic partnerships, exchange practical strategies and lessons learned, build capacity for community-engaged research, and foster future collaborations.

Objectives

To achieve this goal, the CE Symposium will support the following objectives:

1. Community–Academic Partnerships — Highlight community–academic partnerships addressing community priorities and improving health and well-being, while sharing practical lessons from their work.

2. Leadership Development and Capacity Building — Support the next generation of community and academic leaders through shared learning and capacity-building opportunities in community-engaged research.

3. Collaborative Approaches to Shared Participation — Promote relationship-building, humility, mutual respect, and shared decision-making as foundations for meaningful community–academic partnerships.

4. Networking, Collaboration, and Knowledge Exchange — Create opportunities for community members, students, researchers, community health workers, and organizational partners to connect, exchange practical strategies, and learn from one another’s experiences.

This intensive two-day continuing dental education program provides an evidence-based comprehensive review of Dental Sleep Medicine, Temporomandibular Disorders, and Orofacial Pain within a structured curriculum. Led by a multidisciplinary faculty, the course emphasizes current scientific evidence, recognized diagnostic frameworks, and clinically applicable treatment protocols.

This program is designed for general dentists and specialists who wish to expand their knowledge and skills in dental sleep medicine, temporomandibular disorders (TMD), and orofacial pain.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

Describe the basic pathophysiology and clinical presentation of common sleep-related breathing disorders.Identify key screening signs, symptoms, and risk factors for sleep-related breathing disorders.Perform a structured clinical examination for sleep disorders, TMD and orofacial pain, including targeted history, pain assessment, and musculoskeletal evaluation.Discuss the indications, limitations, and potential adverse effects of oral appliance therapy for obstructive sleep apnea, and describe principles of appliance design and titration.Describe conservative, reversible, and evidence-based management strategies for common TMD and orofacial pain conditions, including when to refer to other providers.

Course Overview

The course will provide information to meet the Nitrous Oxide/oxygen inhalation conscious sedation. This is a required course for dentists on the rules and regulations for the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners to qualify for a sedation/anesthesia permit.

Objectives

At the end of the didactic and clinical sessions, the participant will be able to:

Define conscious sedation and be aware of the benefits for the patient and dentistUnderstand the psychophysiology of pain, anxiety, and sedationUnderstand the physiology of respiration and of N2O-O2 inhalationKnow the advantages, disadvantages, indications, and contraindications to the use of N2O in normal and medically compromised patientsUnderstand the techniques used to administer N2O and monitor patients while they receive itRecognize the complications that may arise as a result of N2O administration, and understand the prevention, early detection, and treatment of these complicationsLearn the hazards associated with the use of N2O and accepted methods used to reduce exposure to an acceptable level in the dental officeRecognize special problems associated with the use of N2O in children and know the proper technique for administering it to themDiscuss nitrous oxide equipment, including tanks, regulators, manifolds and machinesUnderstand guidelines for installation and use as issued by the National Fire Protection Association and the American Dental AssociationRecognize the similarities of N2O sedation and hypnosis, be familiar with the basic concepts of hypnosis and its usefulness as an adjunct to N2O sedation

The material covered will discuss safe and effective pain management related to the prescription of opioids and other controlled substances as well as approved procedures of prescribing and monitoring controlled substances.

Objectives

After the presentation, the participant will:

Learn the history of opioid use globally. Learn the nature of contemporary opioid overuse in the US. Learn how non-opioid analgesics compare to opioid analgesic efficacy. Learn indications and contraindications of opioid and non-opioid analgesics. Learn analgesic strategies to maximize pain control for their patients.

Description

This course is intended to satisfy SBDE rules 111.1 and 104.1 as of this date. This portion of the course will emphasize risks associated with analgesics that are often underappreciated. Understanding these risks will allow the practitioner to better select from all the tools in the analgesic toolbox to provide maximum pain control with minimum risk. Practice situations will be used to illustrate the points raised in the discussion.

Objectives

After completing the course, the participant will:

Understand how and when NSAIDs increase the risk of stroke and myocardial infarctionUnderstand how and when NSAIDs increase the risk of renal failureUnderstand how and when NSAIDs increase the risk of liver failureUnderstand how and when NSAIDs increase the risk of gut complications
