About this Event
Program Description
The opioid epidemic has broadly impacted communities and healthcare system. As morbidity and mortality related to opioids have increased, so have hospital admissions related to opioid and intravenous drug use including skin and soft tissue infections, heart infections, severe withdrawal symptoms, and more. Complications of drug use may lead to complex and prolonged hospitalizations. Hospitalization is a reachable moment and important opportunity to increase access to opioid use disorder (OUD) management, treatment, and harm reduction. Inpatient acute care environments are uniquely and well-positioned to help patients with substance use disorders as part of hospitalization. Join this learning community to learn how to leverage a patient’s time in hospital or other acute care settings to address OUD.
Learning Objectives
-Understand the need/business case for treating OUD in the hospital setting.
-Illustrate the process for starting buprenorphine therapy for hospitalized patients.
-Develop a clinical care management plan for acute and perioperative pain for patients engaged in pharmacotherapy for OUD.
-Formulate cross-disciplinary care between hospital medicine, general surgeons, anesthesia and others.
-Describe current models for improved care of hospitalized patients with OUD.
-Describe how stigma limits access to care for people with OUD.
-Discuss actionable steps that can be taken to reduce stigma.
Join the Support Hospital Opioid Use Disorder Treatment (SHOUT) ECHO the third Thursday of each month.
